True accuracy only comes from a test: maximum heart rate is highly individual. A real measurement (maximal test in sports medicine or on the mountain/track) gives your personal value.
Maximum heart rate tests place heavy strain on the heart and circulation. Only perform them if you are healthy and have no risk factors. If in doubt, get a medical check-up beforehand.
Formula: Tanaka HRmax = 208 − 0.7 × age. Standard deviation of the estimate: ±10 beats/min. · Source: Tanaka H, Monahan KD, Seals DR. Age-predicted maximal heart rate revisited. J Am Coll Cardiol. 2001;37(1):153–156.
